Within Ashburnham Memorial Park is the iconic “Armour Hill”. Because it is the highest point in the city, it has a long-standing tradition of winter tobogganing. Tobogganing season does, unfortunately, leave a tremendous amount of plastic and other waste behind in the park.
The AMSG organizes a regular garbage clean-up event every Spring when the tobogganing season ends. This helps to keep the park clean and safe for residents, visitors and wildlife.
AMSG also hosts a fall clean-up in November “before the snow flies”. The fall clean-up tends to focus on the upper park around the large parking lot where, unfortunately, a lot of trash seems to find it’s way into the surrounding forest.
To date the AMSG have had two garbage clean-up events. Through these events we have collected a total of 36 bags of garbage and 4 bags of recyclables as well as several large items (signposts, doors, mirrors, wheels..). And Donna Reid (@butt1community) was able to add over 2.5 pounds of cigarette butts to her Butt 1 Community initiative for Charity. Butt 1 Community is a non-profit organization and all cigarette waste collected is stored, dried, weighed and packaged to be sent away for recycling.
Ashburnham Memorial Park is approximately 50 acres in size, so the more volunteers that show up to help at these clean-ups, the more widespread our cleaning efforts can be!
We hope to see you at an event! Our next cleanups are planned for:
